Dressed entirely in black, with her characteristic extraordinary expressiveness, Asta Nielsen—in a cross-dressing role—repeatedly serves as the focal point amid the “sets,” some of which are relatively minimalist in design. Elaborate lighting design and depth of the sets accentuate the events surrounding the Danish princess (Asta Nielsen), who is posing as Hamlet, the heir to the throne. When her father, the king, is murdered, she seeks revenge. (mg)
